The TEF for study in France

The TEF assesses written and oral French skills for any foreign student applying for registration for a first cycle of university studies in France.

It has been officially recognized since 2004 by the French Ministry of National Education.

For university admission in France, it consists of 4 compulsory tests :

– Written comprehension: 60 min – 50 questions
– Oral comprehension: 40 min – 60 questions
– Written expression: 60 min – 2 topics to cover
– Glossary and structure: 30 min – 40 questions

The oral expression test (15 min – 2 topics to cover) is optional.

To certify your level, you will need to obtain a score greater than or equal to 400/699 in the TEF written tests.

Apply to other French-speaking countries

Many French-speaking higher education establishments, particularly Canadians, recognize the TEF as proof of your level in French as part of an admission procedure.

Find out directly from the school you wish to attend when applying for registration: it will tell you the number and type of TEF tests you will have to take.

What level must I obtain for my application to be accepted by a French educational establishment?

Does the TEF allow me to be exempt from the TCF for the DAP (prior admission request)?

In fact, you are exempt from the TCF for the DAP if you have successfully passed the French Evaluation Test (TEF), organized by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and you have obtained at least 14 /20 in the written expression test.

What are the exemptions from the French test?

You are exempt from a French test, if you already hold the TCF for the DAP, a DELF B2, a DALF C1/C2, a French baccalaureate (issued by the French Ministry of Education ), or student from the French bilingual sections appearing on a list established jointly by the French ministries of national education and foreign affairs.

You are also exempt from the French test if you come from a French-speaking country or a country where French is an official language (provided you have completed all of your secondary studies in French-speaking establishments).

The list of officially French-speaking countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo – Brazzaville, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea – Conakry, Mali, Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Togo

The list of countries where French is an official language: Burundi, Canada, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Djibouti, Haiti, Madagascar, Mauritania (except Arabic-speaking), Rwanda, Seychelles, Switzerland, Chad and Vanuatu

Please note: some establishments require you to have the test/diploma (TEF/TCF/DALF/DELF) even if you are exempt from the latter.
