How is the TEF evaluated?

The tests are evaluated using a 7 level scale, from level 0 (most basic abilities) to level 6 (complete mastery).

This scale refers to the 6 levels (A1 to C2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) of the Council of Europe and the 12 Canadian (NCLC) / Quebec (EQNCF) language proficiency levels.

  • Les épreuves de compréhension écrite, compréhension orale et lexique et structure sont sous the form of multiple choice questionnaires.
  • The written expression test consists of the writing of two writings about everyday life. It is evaluated by two independent, trained and experienced correctors.
  • The oral expression test consists of two role-playing games corresponding to everyday situations. It is evaluated by two independent examiners: the test leader, then by a second evaluator, based on the recording of the test.

How do I get my results?

Your results will be sent to the testing center within approximately 2 to 4 weeks from the date of receipt of the session materials.

Each certificate is detailed and personalized (with your photo and signature).

For each test, it specifies:

  • the number of points obtained,
  • the level reached,
  • a description of your current skills in general French.

The results are valid for two years.. You can retake the test as many times as you wish, respecting a period of 30 days between each exam.

How do I request special accommodation?

Business French offers different arrangements in order to make the TEF accessible to candidates with disabilities or illiteracy. The candidate with a specific accommodation need must, before any registration, contact the testing center chosen to submit their application.

To obtain accommodation adapted to their situation, the candidate must obtain a medical certificate by a practitioner who will explain the nature of the disability and issue recommendations for organizing the session (for the tests concerned) in view of the list of possible adaptations of the TEF which will be made available to them (provision by the center of an assessor, allocation of additional third time, adaptation of the sound volume, etc.). ).

In the case of electronics, noted by the assessment center, des solutions d’assistance et/ou des aménagements (manual written expression test for example) may be offered to the candidate concerned.

The assessment center will notify Business French dans les plus brefs délais afin que celui-ci examine la demande et puisse rapidement valider la possibilité d’un aménagement spécifique des conditions de passation.

For the TEF / TEFAQ / TEF Canada : in the event of exemption from one or more tests, the candidate will only be invoiced for the tests actually taken.

Pour le TEF Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité : en cas de dispense à une ou plusieurs épreuves, le candidat est dispensé de passer tout le test et doit présenter son certificat médical directement à la préfecture.

Applicants for a resident card in France can request an adjustment of the tests by presenting the medical certificate given to the prefecture and duly completed by the attending physician.

Please note: only the model medical certificate provided to the prefecture can be used to support the application for a resident card, no other document is accepted.

For more information, we invite you to consult For more information, we invite you to consult Fixing the medical certificate model provided for in B of 5 ° of article R. 314-1 of the code for the entry and stay of foreigners and the right of asylum.

Combien coûte le test ?

Registration fees are set by the administration center. Prices may vary from one center to another and depending on the number of tests.

Can I cancel my registration?

A registration is firm and definitive. The registration fees you have paid remain acquired.

In the event of cancellation before the day of the test or absence on the day of the test for major reasons (illness, professional impediment, death of a parent, etc.), you must present to the center proof (medical certificate, employer certificate, etc.). Business French then studies the reasons for absence and possibly offers new registration in the center, at no additional cost.

In the event of an unjustified absence or abandonment, you will not be reimbursed. You accept these conditions by signing the registration form when you register in the center.

How to write special characters (é, è, à, ç, â, ê...) on an AZERTY keyboard?

If your computer keyboard does not have the special characters (é, è, ê, ç, à, …), they will also be available on a virtual keyboard, directly on the page where you take the exam.

How is my score calculated?

For the Oral and Written Comprehension tests, as well as Lexicon and Structure, only one answer is possible. Each correct answer gives one point and giving a wrong answer does not take away a point.

The total number of correct answers does not constitute the final score. This total is converted into The total number of correct answers does not constitute the final score. This total is converted into

The Oral and Written Expression tests are evaluated by two independent examiners, by means of a a standardized evaluation grid. The result of these evaluations is also converted into a calibrated score.

To find out the Canadian language proficiency level (CLB) corresponding to your score, please refer to the Tableau de correspondance TEF – NCLC.

In what format is the certificate of results presented?

You will receive an email giving you access to an electronic certificate of results (you will not be issued a paper certificate). Be careful to check your spam, where the certificate is sometimes found.

This dematerialized certificate is an official document that you can present to the competent authorities as part of your administrative procedures.

I would like to retake the test. What is the waiting period?

You can introduce yourself as many times on the test as you want.

The 30 day waiting period is however requested between two successive examinations.

Can I make a request for appeal?

Business French and its partner centers do everything possible to ensure that the TEF tests are taken in the best conditions and with fairness among candidates.

Know that the oral expression test is assessed by two examiners : the facilitator of the test in the administration centers, then by a second evaluator at the CCI Paris Ile-de-France, on the basis of the recording of the administration.

For written expression, all the writings of TEF candidates are corrected by two independent evaluators of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France (and not in the examination centers).

Our evaluators are based on evaluation grids to evaluate which include a set of criteria: communication skills, lexicon, grammar, organization, fluency, etc.

The final score takes all of these criteria into account. You will find here the expected skills for each level and for each test.

The evaluation procedure and criteria are the same for all candidates. The recordings of the oral tests, like the written productions, are always anonymous for our evaluators (only the candidate number appears).

You have nevertheless noticed a serious anomaly or malfunction when taking your test? In this case, you have the option to file an appeal.

Here is the procedure to follow.

What are the consequences in the event of fraud?

In case of fraud, falsification or disruption of the smooth running of the test session noted by the prescriber, the approved assessment center or the CCI Paris Ile-de-France, sanctions are taken by the disciplinary commission of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France.

For the candidate, the sanction may consist, depending on the type of fraud or falsification, of a cancellation of the test or possibly the certificate issued, and/or in a ban on taking the test for a fixed period of time by the commission.

The decision of the disciplinary commission is communicated to the fraudulent candidate, to the assessment center and to the prescriber.

Attention Agents in charge of monitoring files requiring a TEF certificate (Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) of Quebec, agents of prefectures, Universities, Campus France , etc.) can have access to the results obtained by candidates directly from the CCI Paris Île-de-France.

In the event of non-compliance with this instruction, the CCI Paris Ile-de-France reserves the right to take appropriate action (invalidation of the completion, ban on taking the TEF, legal action, etc.).
