A1 — Breakthrough

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Can introduce themselves or others and ask and answer basic questions. Can interact simply if the other person talks slowly.

A2 — Elementary

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions. Can communicate in simple, routine tasks. Can describe their background, immediate environment and matters related to familiar needs.

B1 — Threshold

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can deal with most situations encountered in a French-speaking area. Can produce simple connected text on familiar topics.

B2 — Vantage

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on concrete and abstract topics. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with native speakers. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects.

C1 — Advanced

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts and recognise implicit meaning. Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much apparent searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.

C2 — Mastery

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources. Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely.
