TEF Integration, Residence & Nationality

Recognised by the French Interior Ministry, TEF IRN is for any foreign person over 16 wishing to:

  • Validate their A1 level as part of the civic integration pathway (OFII)
  • Certify A2 level for a multi-year residence card application (CSP)
  • Certify B1 level for a long-term resident card application
  • Certify B1 level for a French nationality application
  • Certify B1 level to work in the private security sector

Reading Comprehension

Objective:Assess your ability to read and understand written documents.
Content:20 questions — 2 adaptive sections of 10 questions (26 screens total)
Duration:30 min (2 × 15 min)
Format:MCQ — 4 choices, 1 correct. Free navigation within each section.
Scoring:Correct = 1pt · Wrong = 0 pt

Objective:Assess your ability to understand spoken French.
Content:20 questions — 2 sections of 10 questions (30 screens total)
Duration:20 min (2 × 10 min)
Format:MCQ — Answer as you go (no going back). Each audio played once only.
Scoring:Correct = 1pt · Wrong = 0 pt

Objective:Assess your ability to express yourself in writing in French.
Duration:30 min
Section A:10 min — Write a message to ask for news (minimum 40 words)
Section B:20 min — Present arguments to persuade (minimum 100 words)
Note:Special characters (é, è, ê, ç, à…) available on an on-screen virtual keyboard.

Oral Expression — Face to face

Objective:Assess your ability to communicate orally with an examiner.
Duration:10 min total
Format:Face to face with an examiner — systematically recorded for double assessment.
Section A:5 min — Phone call to obtain information
Section B:5 min — Help a friend make a decision

Taking the test — On the day

On the exam day, arrive at our centre at the time stated on your admission form. The invigilator checks your ID and asks you to confirm your personal details (surname, first name, date of birth, email) — make sure they are correct as they will appear on your certificate.

Rules to remember:

Mobile phones and electronic devices must be switched off
No dictionary or reference document allowed
Only your ID document may remain on the desk
No communication with other candidates
During oral tests: no aids allowed (rough paper, notes, documents)
No late arrivals admitted once the test has started
No leaving allowed during computer-based tests

The RC, LC and WE tests are computer-based. The invigilator provides your access code for the CCI platform. The OE test is face to face with the examiner.

Special arrangements (disability / digital illiteracy)

Submit a medical certificate before registering. For long-stay card applicants: use the prefecture medical certificate (decree 10/02/2021). For naturalisation: use the model from decree NOR: INTV2009412A of 17/07/2020. View official supporting documents →

Certificate & Results

Your results will be sent within 2–4 weeks from the date the session materials are received. Certificates are digital — you will receive an email with a link to your secure digital vault. The certificate is kept for 10 years by the CCI.

TEF IRN assesses up to B2 level. Your certificate shows your score and level for each test (from A1 to B2).

Registration & cancellation conditions:

  • Must be over 16 years old — no degree required
  • Registration is final and binding — fees are non-refundable
  • Justified absence (illness, bereavement…): re-registration at no charge on proof
  • Unjustified absence: no refund
